During the Xia Dynasty, there was a vassal state called Zouzou, and most of its people were known as the Zouzou clan, which later simplified to the Zi clan. In the ancient Jiguo of the Jiang lineage (present-day Jitai Village, Shouguang County, Shandong Province), there was a city named Zi. After it was conquered by the Qi state, the descendants still took Zi as their surname to commemorate this once-existing state. During the Spring and Autumn period, there was a place called Zi (present-day Gong County, Henan Province) in the Zhou state. The local residents have used the place name as their surname for generations, becoming the Zi clan. The prominent families of the Zi surname are from the Bohai Prefecture (along the Bohai Bay coast of today's Hebei Province and Liaoning Province).
