After King Wu of the Zhou Dynasty established the Zhou Dynasty in ancient times, he enfeoffed the descendants of Emperor Yan of ancient times in the state of Zhou, allowing them to establish the Zhou State. They were also enfeoffed with the title of Duke, so the monarch of the Zhou State was called Duke Zhou. The location of the Zhou State was in today's Anqiu County, Shandong Province. To the northeast of Anqiu County, there is still a Chunyu City today. This Chunyu City was originally the capital of the Zhou State. The Zhou State was once destroyed and then restored. After its restoration, it was called the Chunyu State. Later, the descendants of the aristocratic family of the Chunyu State took the name of the state as their surname. The prominent families of the Chunyu clan were based in Qi County (around today's Linzi County, Shandong Province). Later, due to migrations, some of them became prominent families in Henei County (the area north of the Yellow River in the western part of today's Henan Province).
