Surname Origin
The origin of the surname "Hu": 1. It comes from the "Gui" surname and is based on a personal name. According to "Yuanhe Xingzuan", in the early Western Zhou Dynasty, Hu Gongman, a descendant of Emperor Shun, was enfeoffed in the State of Chen (present - day Huaiyang, Henan). Later, the state was conquered by the State of Chu. The noble families of the state scattered, and some of them took the name "Hu" of their former duke as their surname. 2. It comes from the "Gui" surname and is based on the name of a state. During the Zhou Dynasty, there was a vassal state named "Hu" with a different surname, located in Fuyang County, Anhui. It was conquered by the State of Chu. Some of its people took "Hu" as their surname. 3. It was changed from a compound surname of the Xianbei ethnic group. According to "Weishu·Guanshizhi", during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, in the Northern Wei Dynasty, there was a compound surname "Hugu" (the surname of the elder brother of Emperor Xian of the Northern Wei) from the northern part of the Dai region. After following Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei to move south to Luoyang, they settled in the Central Plains and changed their surname to the Han - Chinese surname "Hu". 4. According to "Zhou Shu·Li Yuan Zhuan", there was a Hu surname among the Jie people.

Famous Story
Migration and Distribution (Lack of information) The Hu surname is not listed among the top 100 surnames in the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. The Hu surname originated from the Si surname. In ancient times, Emperor Yao abdicated the throne to Emperor Shun, and Emperor Shun, in recognition of Yu the Great's meritorious service in flood - control, abdicated the throne to Yu. However, Yu later passed the throne to his son Qi, who established the Xia Dynasty and was historically known as Xia Qi. Since Yu violated the traditional practice of abdication, it aroused the dissatisfaction of some vassal states. Among them, there was a clan called Youhu Clan that rebelled against Qi but was defeated by Qi, and the clan was almost exterminated. The surviving members of the Youhu Clan changed their surname to Hu to avoid persecution, which became the origin of the Hu surname. Another theory is that after Qi established the Xia Dynasty, he enfeoffed his descendants in Hu (around present - day Huxian County, Shaanxi Province), establishing the Hu State. Some descendants of the noble families of the Hu State took the name of the state as their surname, known as the Hu Clan, which is another origin of the Hu surname today. The Hu surname originated in Huxian County, Shaanxi Province. Due to historical reasons, it later spread across the country. One branch settled in Macheng County, Huguang. Later, because of the family's prosperity, they were framed and persecuted. Some clan members then migrated to various places. One branch moved to Guizhou, and now some are distributed in Tongzi, Guizhou; some are in Shijiao Town, Qijiang County, Chongqing; and some are in Jiangjin, Chongqing and other places.
