Hua Hengfang (1833 - 1902) With the courtesy name Ruoting, he was from Jinkui, Jiangsu (now Wuxi, Jiangsu Province), and was a mathematician in the late Qing Dynasty. He held the position of the magistrate of Zhili Prefecture and was proficient in mathematical principles. He had a profound knowledge of the study of natural phenomena. Hengfang not only planned the establishment of machine manufacturing bureaus but also translated a total of twelve kinds of books on mathematics and geology, over 160 volumes in total. Later, he taught for twenty years and achieved great results. His scope of works and translations was very wide, including Algebra, Trigonometric Mathematics, An Introduction to Calculus, An Elementary Knowledge of Geology, Mathematical Manuscripts of Xing Su Xuan, and Writings of Xing Su Xuan.
