The origin of the surname "Qiu": 1. Qiu is also written as "丘". According to the "Explanation and Commentary on Sound and Meaning of Chinese Characters" which quotes the annotation of "Biography of Prince Yuan of Chu in the Book of Han" by Ying Shao of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Qiu is a surname. Later generations added the "邑" radical to "丘" and changed it to "邱" to avoid the personal name of Confucius (whose personal name was "丘"). 2. It is a surname derived from a place name. According to the "Folklore and General Meanings", during the Zhou Dynasty, Jiang Taigong was enfeoffed in the State of Qi and established the capital at Yingqiu (now Linzi County, Shandong Province). Later, there were people with the surname "丘". 3. According to the "Biography of the Wuhuan in the Book of the Later Han", during the Eastern Han Dynasty, there were also people with the surname "丘" in the Wuhuan tribe, a branch of the Donghu. 4. Qiu Chujji Qiu Chi (464–508), style name Xifan, was a native of Wucheng (now Wuxing County, Zhejiang Province) between the Southern Qi and Liang dynasties. He was able to write articles at the age of eight. Emperor Wu of Liang once appointed him as a Secretary in the Palace and an attendant awaiting imperial orders in the Wende Hall. The emperor once wrote Lianzhu poems, and dozens of court officials followed suit. The ones written by Qiu Chi were elegant and charming in diction, ranking first among them at that time. Qiu Xinggong A native of Luoyang in the Tang Dynasty. He was good at riding and archery. During the Zhenguan period (627–649), he made great contributions in the conquest of Gaochang. An order was issued to carve stone statues of humans and horses and erect them in front of the Que Gate of the Zhaoling Mausoleum to honor him. He served as the governor of Ji and Shan Prefectures.
