shèng 盛
百家姓 · Bai Jia Xing
Surname Origin
The origin of the surname "Sheng": It comes from the Ji surname and is derived from the name of a state. According to "Book of the Later Han" and "Comprehensive Genealogy of All Surnames", in the early Western Zhou Dynasty, Shao Gongshi established the Yan State. One of his sons was enfeoffed in Sheng (located in present - day Henan Province) as a vassal state of the Yan State. "The Biography of Emperor Mu's Travels" states that Sheng was a state of the Ji clan. Later, it was conquered by the Qi State, and the descendants took the surname Shi. In the Han Dynasty, to avoid the personal name of Emperor Yuan of Han, Liu Shi, they changed their surname to Sheng, once again using the name of their ancestors' enfeoffed state as the surname.
