Xi Rongdian, a native of the State of Wei during the Spring and Autumn Period, was full of lofty aspirations and one of the seventy-two worthy disciples among Confucius' three thousand disciples.

There was a place named Mount Shaoxi (now Fengyang County, Shaanxi Province) in the Spring and Autumn Period. The local residents took the place name as their surname and became the Xi clan. Regarding the origin of the Xi surname, there is another theory (however, this theory is not fully annotated in historical records, so it is not included in the official origin). There was a small vassal state in ancient times that used "Xi" as its state name, and the people of the state passed down this as their family surname. It is said that the descendants of the Western Liang clan and Fugong all changed their surnames to Xi.

Xi Yu, styled Jianhou, was a native of Xiangyang in the Tang Dynasty. He passed the imperial examinations. He was honest, upright, and free from covetousness, and was not intimidated by the powerful and influential. Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty once climbed the Chaoyuan Pavilion and composed poems. Among the court officials, the emperor considered Xi Yu's poem the best and hailed him as the crown of poets. During the Tianbao period (AD 742 - 755), he rose to the position of Minister of Rites.
