During the Spring and Autumn Period, Prince Yan of the Chu State was enfeoffed in the State of Xiang (now Xiangcheng, Henan Province), which was destroyed in 647 BC. According to "Zuo Zhuan", the State of Xiang was destroyed by Duke Xi of Lu, while "Gongyang Zhuan" and "Guliang Zhuan" state that it was destroyed by Duke Huan of Qi. The descendants took the name of the original state as their surname. Xiang Yu, the Overlord of Chu, was from the noble family of the State of Xiang.
