As early as in the Shang Dynasty, it is said that Ge Bo, a descendant of Boyi, was enfeoffed as a vassal. After his fiefdom was destroyed, a branch of his descendants moved to Zhucheng (now Zhucheng, Shandong Province) and then to Yangdu (now Yishui County, Shandong Province). Since there were already people with the Ge surname in the local area, the later Ge people adopted the characters "Zhuge" as their surname. In the Qin Dynasty, Ge Ying (a general under Chen Sheng) made many contributions in the peasant uprising but was killed because of slander.
