In ancient times, King Wu of Zhou defeated King Zhou and overthrew the Shang Dynasty, establishing the Western Zhou Dynasty. Among the survivors of the Shang Dynasty, there were seven famous prominent families, which were formed during the Shang Dynasty and included many talented people. The Suo surname was one of these six families. King Wu of Zhou respected them but was also afraid that they might revive the Shang Dynasty. Later, the Rebellion of Wu Geng broke out. After Duke Zhou Dan quelled the rebellion, he decided to relocate six of these families to the State of Lu and enfeoffed Boqin, the eldest son of Duke Zhou, as the king of Lu. This was done both to allow the six prominent families of the Shang Dynasty to live in peace and to keep an eye on them. According to "Yuanhe Xingzuan", the Suo family in China was one of the seven great clans in the Shang Dynasty. The descendants of the Suo family have their prominent branches from Dunhuang and Wuwei. Dunhuang is the ancestral homeland and the place where the Suo family originated, while Wuwei later became another prominent area for the Suo family. The Suo surname has a history of about 4000 years to date. The prominent branch of the family is located in Wuwei Commandery, which is now in the area of Wuwei County, Gansu Province.
