Famous Story
Migration and Distribution (Lack of information) The Zhuge surname is not listed among the top 100 surnames in the mainland and Taiwan. There are different views on the origin of the Zhuge surname. As early as in the Shang Dynasty, it is said that Ge Bo, a descendant of Boyi, was enfeoffed as a vassal. After his fiefdom was destroyed, a branch of his descendants moved to Zhucheng (now Zhucheng, Shandong Province) and then to Yangdu (now Yishui County, Shandong Province). Since there were already people with the Ge surname in the local area, the later Ge people adopted the characters "Zhuge" as their surname. In the Qin Dynasty, Ge Ying (a general under Chen Sheng) made many contributions in the peasant uprising but was killed because of slander. Later, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Liu Che, felt unjust for him and conferred the title of Marquis of Zhu County on his descendants. Therefore, the descendants combined the characters "Zhu" and "Ge" to form the surname "Zhuge". Another theory is that there was a surname "Zhan Ge". In the Qi people's language system, the sounds of "Zhan" and "Zhu" were indistinguishable. After a long time, it was mispronounced as "Zhuge". The prominent families with the compound surname Zhuge lived in Langya Commandery, which was established during the reign of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. It is equivalent to the areas of Zhucheng County, Linyi County, and Jiaonan County in Shandong Province today.
