According to "New Book of Tang: Genealogy of Prime Ministers", the fifteenth son of King Wen of Zhou was enfeoffed in Bi Yi (now Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province) and was commonly known as Duke Gao of Bi. Later, his descendants adopted the surname "Bi". 2. It was changed from a compound surname of the Xianbei ethnic group.
