Famous Story
Migration and Distribution The Cong surname is not ranked among the top 100 surnames in the Chinese Hundred Family Surnames on the Chinese mainland or in Taiwan. The Cong surname originated from the Ji surname. In ancient Zhou Dynasty, King Ping of Zhou enfeoffed his youngest son to Cong (around present-day Tongcheng County, Anhui Province) and granted him the title of marquis, historically known as Marquis Cong. Later, Marquis Cong established the State of Cong in the Cong area. The royal descendants of the State of Cong took the name of the fief as their surname, calling themselves the Zong clan. Later, they removed the "wood" radical and changed it to Cong, which is the origin of the Cong surname today. There was a general named Zong Gong in the Han Dynasty, and his descendants were also called the Zong clan. Later, the Zong clan changed their surname to Cong. The Cong surname was included in the Hundred Family Surnames compiled by people in the Song Dynasty. Therefore, the evolution from the Zong clan to the Cong clan should have taken place after the Han Dynasty and before the Song Dynasty.
