During the Spring and Autumn period, there was a doctor in the State of Zheng named Xie Kou. He was enfeoffed in a place called Du (now Fangcheng County, Henan Province). He was made a king and later granted the title of earl, and was commonly known as Xie Bo, Xie Du Kou, and Du Shu. His descendants later took his fief as their surname, calling themselves the Du clan. This has been passed down from generation to generation, and is regarded as the origin of the Du surname.
